Content Doesn't Sound Like Me

Why generated content may feel generic, and how to fix it.

The most common reason AI content sounds off is that the brand voice config is too thin. The AI can only sound like you if you've told it enough about how you sound.

Diagnose

Go to Settings → Brand & Voice and check:

  • Brand identity: Are name, tagline, motto, mission, and "What We Are" all filled in? They form the AI's mental model of who you are.
  • Voice attributes: Are the 5 sliders set to values that match your actual tone? Don't leave them all at 5.
  • Personality / Writing principles: Do you have at least 2–3 principles with good/bad examples? This is the most powerful signal the AI has.
  • Terms to use / avoid: Have you added words you actually use and words you hate seeing in your content?

Fix tone with voice attributes

The 5 sliders directly affect output:

  • Formality: dial down for casual, up for professional
  • Friendliness: dial up for warm, down for neutral
  • Clarity: dial up if content is too dense
  • Brevity: dial up if content is too long
  • Technical depth: dial up if content is too surface-level

Changes take effect immediately on the next generation.

See Voice Attributes for the full breakdown.

Add personality traits with examples

Personality traits with good/bad examples are the AI's most concrete guidance. Without them, "confident" or "direct" mean different things. With them, the AI has anchors.

Example trait:

TraitConfident but not arrogant
ApplicationMake strong claims when evidence supports it. Skip hedging.
Good example"Threading works because it forces clarity."
Bad example"We're the industry leader and everyone else is behind."

Aim for 3–5 traits, not 10. More dilutes the signal.

Sharpen writing principles

Settings → Brand & Voice → Principles is the most direct lever for tone control. Each principle is a do/don't statement that gets injected into every generation prompt:

Always open with a concrete example or data point.
Never use em-dashes. Never say "delve" or "leverage".
End X posts with a question to drive replies.

Three to five sharp principles beat ten vague ones.

Refine your topics

Vague topic entries produce vague content. In Settings → Brand & Voice → Topics, replace generic items in the Primary list with specific phrasings.

Instead of "AI productivity tools", try "Hidden time costs of prompt engineering for non-technical founders."

See Topics for more guidance.

Regenerate the brand voice config

If your brand voice was generated during onboarding and feels off, you can re-run the AI analysis. Settings → Brand & Voice → Regenerate with AI. This re-fetches your URLs and re-runs the brand voice inference.

Still off?

The most reliable fix: paste real writing examples into the brand voice context. Past blog posts, newsletter excerpts, anything that captures your tone. The AI uses these as a style anchor.

Tone tuning is iterative. Generate 5–10 posts, identify the best one, figure out which setting it's nailing. Then look at the worst one and identify which dial needs adjusting. Don't try to perfect all 10 knobs in one pass.
